It's been a real while since we've done a female-owned small business feature here on our blog, so we thought we'd kick off with RYB, an incredible candle business (since it's the month of love)!
Tell us a little about yourself and what you do.
I am Roxane, a qualified teacher by profession who teaches Grade 5 English.
How old is your business now?
RYB turned 1 on the 30th of January!
How did you get your idea or concept for the business? And what was your mission at the outset?
I saw Kim Kardashian's body as a perfume bottle and thought to try and make my own mold and make a unique candle inspired by Kim Ks body perfume bottle (the Athena was my first candle), and the rest is history.
What is unique about your business?
My variety of candles as well as my willingness to customize for clients (colour, fragrances, etc). I also love creating “fade candles” and just have such a huge passion for quality.
Are you a solo entrepreneur or how many members does your team currently comprise?
It's just me!
To what do you attribute your success?
My hard work and dream to be a successful entrepreneur.
What does a typical day look like for you? And how many hours, on average, do you work daily?
I wake up at 4am! Candles go in in the morning, then I work my usual job 7am - 3pm. I put in a lot of hours between 4pm and 10pm and on the weekends. I manage to make quite a few of my candles.
How has being an entrepreneur affected your life?
I’ve become much more confident in my ability and have been able to do some of the things I couldn’t do before as well as save some money and invest towards something bigger.
If you could go back in time and start up your business all over again, what would you do differently?
Absolutely nothing!
What is one piece of advice you’d like to give to someone just starting out?
Perseverance and passion are key! Never give up on your unique ideas.
