Love is in the Hair

Updated: Sep 5, 2020

Carla and I have come a long way now. Even before she had her own salon, she's been responsible for my good hair days.

Tell us a little about yourself and what you do.

My name is Carla Goliath. I'm a hairstylist and I own a salon in the southern suburbs called Avantgarde Salon. I started out working for a few salons. I then went mobile and established myself that way. Once I gained a decent clientele I was given the privilege to own my own business when a family friend approached me to buy over their existing salon. I have been successful running my business ever since and living what I always dreamed of doing.

How old is your business now?

My business is 8 years old.

How did you come up with the idea of and name for your business?

In our industry "Avantgarde" is a term used during hair competitions as a category for flamboyant hair styles. When I was in my early 20's I heard of it and researched the word. It means "pushing the boundaries beyond the norm". I always told myself, 'If I ever get to own a salon, that would be the name I choose'.

What makes your business unique?

I pride myself on making people feel comfortable. I do believe it's a safe space for clients to not feel judged and they can comfortably feel like they're at home in my space.

Are you a solo-entrepreneur or how many members does your team currently comprise?

We are a very small business. We are 2 stylists and a receptionist.

How do you market your business, and which methods have been most successful for you?

Social media and word of mouth has been our marketing strategy. Facebook and Instagram has definitely helped with marketing the business.

What does a typical day look like for you? And how many hours, on average, do you work daily?

My day is never the same. It might have quick services like wash, cut and styling all day. Other days I have big chemical services like highlights and treatments. We can do anything from 2 to 10 clients a day. The salon is open every day except Sunday's but we each have an off day during the week.

How has being an entrepreneur affected your life?

It gives me a bit more flexibility. It definitely comes with added stress and issues one has to deal with but on the whole I prefer the responsibility. I know what I put in is what I will get out at the end of the day.

If you could go back in time and start up your business all over again, what would you do differently?

I would have registered my business from the get go. I would also have the accountant I currently have from the start. I went through hard lessons learning that a bad bookkeeper can break your business.

What is one piece of advice you’d like give to someone just starting out?

Don't let anyone make you feel like you're not capable of being successful. Never have huge expectations. Pay yourself a salary instead of living off your daily takings. Lastly, never let family or friends think your business is a free service for them to take advantage of.
