Something Special by Samihah

Tell us a little about yourself and what you do.

My name is Samihah, I am a 29-year-old dynamic woman and hold extensive knowledge in the Hospitality industry. I continuously strive for success and think of myself as highly motivated. I enjoy arts and crafts and have a very bubbly and bold personality. I was employed at a leading e-commerce company within the Tourism Industry; however, I was retrenched in July 2020 due to Covid19 and in August 2020 I then started my own company called Something Special by Samihah -- a gifting company, specializing in bespoke gifts, treats and flower bouquets.

How old is your business now?

8 months.

How did you come up with the idea of and name for your business?

In my spare time, I've always enjoyed making gifts and when I was retrenched I thought it was a perfect opportunity for me to do what I love and turn my hobby into a business. I chose the name “Something Special by Samihah” as it resonated with the gifts and treats that I made, something special and not store-bought.

What is that “one thing” that 2020 has taught you and that you will be using in the future? How will you be doing business differently?

2020 has taught me to be resilient and to always have a side hustle. I have always advocated supporting local businesses and when I started my own business I decided to use women-owned small businesses as my suppliers.

What makes your business unique?

It is unique in that each gift is carefully curated and handcrafted by myself and cannot be bought off the shelves in a store.

Are you a solo entrepreneur or how many members does your team currently comprise?

I am a solo entrepreneur however when I need help I employ high school students who are looking to gain experience and their own paycheck.

How do you market your business, and which methods have been most successful for you?

I market my business via social media platforms -- Instagram, WhatsApp, and Facebook.

Consistent advertising via Instagram has been most successful for me to date.

How has being an entrepreneur affected your life?

It has affected my life mostly in a positive way. I have the freedom to work and play at my own desired time however with that being said it is still daunting and a great financial risk daily.

If you could go back in time and start up your business all over again, what would you do differently?

I would definitely have started when I was younger and would not have stopped even if it was a business that I was pursuing part-time.

What is one piece of advice you’d like to give to someone just starting out?

You have to work at it every single day. Give it your absolute all and there is nothing wrong in asking for help.

Where can we find your business on social media?
