Having worked in the industry myself for a few years, I always enjoy seeing what tourism businesses are up to; particularly during Lockdown. I came across ResActive via social media and I was keen to learn more.
Tell us a little about yourself and what you do.
Hey Everyone, I’m Bronwynne. Hospitality is my life and Tourism is in my blood. I act as a booking agent for accommodation, activities, restaurants, conferences and meetings on behalf of existing and new clients, within South Africa.
How old is your business now?
While the business was registered in early 2020, gearing up has taken some doing but I’m now happy to say that we are fully operational.
How did you come up with the idea of and name for your business?
Wow, this was a process!! I've always wanted a name that speaks to who I am and what it is that I do in this industry. “Res” referring to Reservations, as I have been, and still am, a Reservations Manager. The “Active” part is to showcase our involvement and how active we are and will continue to be in the industry.
What is that “one thing” that this Lockdown period has taught you and that you will be using in the future? How will you be doing business differently?
Not to take anything for granted. And when you think you did enough, go again.
Have you seen local travel pick up since the lift? If so, where are locals visiting?
Yes, definitely. Many local travellers are booking along the West Coast and Overberg regions and there are some inquiries for nature stays such as Cederberg, Breede River, etc.
What makes your business unique?
We are a small business and therefore we focus on unique and bespoke travel, and recommend experiences and destinations based on personal travel experiences. We offer a very personalised service – getting to know our clients and who they are. This gives us a good indication of what we can offer and recommend to them. We also focus mainly on having South Africans experience South Africa in its entirety, as we have many beautiful hidden gems waiting to be explored.
Are you a solo-entrepreneur or how many members does your team currently comprise?
I head up and steer the company, but do have someone looking after all the financial and administrative responsibilities.
How do you market your business, and which methods have been most successful for you?
Currently, social media is our main marketing strategy however, there are other platforms and various tourism boards which I have been tapping into and am still in the process of acquiring. Part of my marketing strategy includes a presentation. This proves to be effective especially during lockdown.
What does a typical day look like for you? And how many hours, on average, do you work daily?
Theoretically, it is important to balance life and work. This however, may not be as easy as the job calls at any time.
How has being an entrepreneur affected your life?
It has definitely changed my mindset! You have to think and apply yourself as an entrepreneur. Your etiquette and resolve changes. Certainly a good change!
If you could go back in time and start up your business all over again, what would you do differently?
My situation is unique in that I started the business during the pandemic. I guess we all have to hustle harder these days but If I could go back, I would definitely not have started my business during a pandemic.
What is one piece of advice you’d like to give to someone just starting out?
Don’t rush the process. And if things change all the time, remember that it is okay. You have to be able to adapt to change. Also, hold your head up high and remember that you have started something for a reason. There will be negativity, but don’t allow that to overrule or over power your positive thoughts, for yourself and for your project.
